Springers Sound Off! --

In response to Kimberly's Column, " Vultures in Florida ":

Boy Kimberly, you nailed WallyWorld (my nickname for the Mart). I cringe when my car gets near the place.

There are so many other choices when it comes to groceries and anything else WallyWorld has to offer.

BUT, the very few times when I visited the place, my Mom and I drove out of our way to the Ashland Wally.

Ashland was really smart in their dealings with them. If you didn't already know Wal-Mart was in Ashland, you certainly wouldn't see it by just driving by. It's waaaaaay off the road and there is NOT ONE big ole honking WM sign on Route 1 or on Rt. 54 (basically the only way to get there.) Plus I think they made a deal that a pretty good percentage of the people they hired had to be from that area.

And I have to admit, the place is very clean, and organized, and the employees seem happy to be there.

But all in all, I still prefer Target, Food Lion and sometimes Ukrops.

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Kamikaze Vacation":

Please forgive this intrusion from a lowly Confederate (L-D, Class of '77) but I read with joy your piece on Sailor Bob.

We may have been rivals on the football field, but we are bonded in our adoration of Sailor Bob.

Did anything ever come of your idea of the T-shirts? Is there any memorabilia available anywhere?

Many thanks for hunting the old salt up. I think about the TV crap my kids are addicted to, and it makes me ache for the good old days.

Merry Christmas!

- Tad Stanley (Lee-Davis, Class of '77)

In response to Harry Shelton's Op-Ed, "Memories of Central Gardens ":

I had the pleasure of attending the 2006 "Wall of Fame" Dinner. The event was wonderful. It brought back old memories. Good to see teachers and coaches from back in the day. I wish the event could be added to the Springer Connection, to show off pictures like past reunions.

Harry Shelton spoke so well of the Springer Connection during his speech. Hopefully, pictures of the Honorees as a group will be available for purchase, whether on the internet,T-Shirts, Video, or DVD. Perhaps have items available at the 2007 "Wall of Fame". Let part of the funds go towards the event.

Hopefully, with the Springer Connection promoting the event, more retired teachers and coaches will attend next year.

ARRRRGGGG!! That makes me angry, just reading your story. Your poor daughter. I like to think I give people the benefit, but that woman truly needs to have the apple from the story shoved straight down her throat!!

Hope it goes better next time.

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Kamikaze Vacation":

Jack -first of all thank you for the great reunion notice for the Class of '66.

Next, I enjoyed your documentary of the motorcycle adventure - sorry we couldn't be at the Blast from the Past last year - but thanks for the very interresting and enjoyable reading!

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Kamikaze Vacation":

Wow! What a great story about Jack's Most Wonderful Adventure.

Having traveled up from Florida to the Second Annual Blast From The Past in the jump seat of Jack's pick-up truck I can certainly attest that wherever Jack goes adventure will surely follow.

One question remains: Where's Waldo?

In response to Donna's Column, " Going, Going ... Gray" :

Donna,
My wife has carte blanche at the salon. I am certainly not spending it on myself. But then, I have had a bad hair day every day since I was 23. In my family, no one takes you seriously unless you are bald.

Remember, old age and treachery always beat youth and skill.

In response to Donna's Column, " I'll Think About That Tomorrow":

Hey Donna, You should try books on tape. I've been hooked on them for a few years now and use them in the car, while working in the house and in the yard. My Mom just bought me a portable CD player so I can listen to them and get more titles at my public library!

- VickiCovey73

PS - I've been getting caught up on your columns. They are entertaining and so true. Keep up the good work.

Well said, Donna. Why does our generation increasingly reject traditional social guidelines like simple courtesy and tact. You described your highway tormentor well. May she have a revelation and come back to the fold of well-behaved folks, or may she encounter unspeakable misfortune.

Now I feel better.

Hey Kimberly, Welcome to Homeroom!!

I feel for you in your eBay mess. I love eBay, but get a little nervous when my package arrives. I think I've just been lucky. You never know.

I always check the sellers feedback. Usually I don't bid on anything less than 99% possitive, then I still read the negatives just to see what they say and what if any response is given by the seller.

I feel sorry for them if you ever to get to give them a piece of your mind! Get 'em girl!!

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Black and Blue at 50":

Personally, Jack I know exactly what you mean. I turn 51 in November and we ain't getting any younger.

My problem is I have a 50 year old body with a 20 year old mind. I haven't learned to slow down yet and do I feel it the next day. Oh well, you have to take each day as it comes and appreciate all that's in store.

Thanks for all your hard work on keeping this wonderful web page available to us all who have at some point walked the halls at HSHS. Or should I say crawl the halls. Take care.

- jimharper73

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Black and Blue at 50":

Hey Jack, I'm moving down there within the next year and the reason I was going is to get away from those type of people. I live in the 'burbs of Boston and just about everyone here is like that and I hate it. People are nosey and arrogant and think their poop does'nt stink. They just aggravate the heck out of me. Its like everyone is always looking for a fight. These folks are know it alls too.

I'm coming down there to get away from that. I hope these situations are rare, as i've heard people down there are so laid back, and the motto is live and let live.

I really enjoyed your column and maybe I'll meet you someday. One thing I need to tell you is I'm a huge RED SOX, PATS, BRUINS, and CELTS fan. So I hope there's others down there too.

Donna, keep him around and Olivia will survive, though she will not think that for a while.

My daughter is 20 and my son is 16 and when there was an issue about a movie, we usually went and got it and decided what we would do from there -- you know, watch it with them and explain along or something. Cathy is better at that than I am but we wound up with two great kids, it is all worth it in the end.

This website is great. Every Springer has the opportunity to bring back the days of high school they loved so much.

I would just like to give those that are getting ready to have reunions some fun advice - our Class of '84 did at our reunion. During football season, go to a home football game and reserve a section for all of your classmates to sit. We had a blast! Better yet, how about a doing a Homecoming float again!

Those were the days!

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Class of 1973 Reunion Report":

Jack,

I loved your comentary on the 30th reunion for the Class of '73. Although I am not from the Class of '73, or any class close to it, it made me smile to read it. The enthusiasim that comes through in your article is catching. I can almost picture what it was like to be there.

I think your idea of a 31st reunion is a great idea. Who says reunions have to be in 5 or 10 year increments? Why not a reunion every year? These are people you spent the most important years of your life with and they have seen you at your best and your worst. I think a group of people like that deserve the opportunity to get together and party more than every 5 or 10 years.

The party doesn't have to end just because highschool does. Let the party rock on!

On the Messageboard:

Have you thought of the possibilty of maybe having a page limit or time limit on subjects? Last night after Denise Feldman let me know I could find part of the answer to my question on another page I decided to start looking at other pages and also wanted to respond to a question asked months ago.

After an hour and a half of searching I couldnt find the topic. I did find the response to something else that Denise let people know about, using the search at the top. I tried this and still didnt have much luck.

So maybe after a certain lenght of time if a topic hasnt been discussed just drop it. Likewise the trivia page and another page have gotten so long it seems simpler to drop a few pages. If somebody wants to bring up an old topic they can simply start it over for some fresh conversation.

Just a thought. Any opinions?

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Taxes and Bikini Waxes --":

I have to agree with you on the school lunch deal. As a Natural/Organic Mgr. for Ukrop's, I am at least encouraged to see high school folks shopping my department and choosing healthier snacks. I attend as many school health fairs a month as I can to let parents know there are healthier choices and let their families taste some of them. After all, we are living longer. Don't we all want to spend less time at the Doctor's office and more time posting on the message board?

"Nessie" debut-

Click to see a larger version of this photo.

I realize this is not a reunion picture.
(Click it for a larger version)

It is a newspaper clipping of Nessie's debut September 5, 1980. I don't know if you're interested in it or not - but I saw the "Nessie" topic on
the message boards & thought I'd forward it for your use if you'd like.

Nessie's debut was September 5, 1980 at the football game against Prince George.

The picture is titled "The Monster in the Kilt" and the caption reads "Nessie, the new mascot for Highland Springs High School, was introduced to the community at a football game against Prince George at the school last night. He respresents the Loch Ness monster, in keeping with the school's new Scottish motif. Mark Wacker, the Student Government Association president, wore the Nessie costume and talked with Tricia Trippet, the head varsity cheerleader, also in Highland dress, before the monster's first formal appearance. The introduction of Nessie solves a mystery posed by numerous posters which have appeared recently in Highland Springs."

Well Jack, it seems I have to agree with you on most of the stuff you said, but I can't imagine being Jewish or any other religion. I would have been kicked out. So I'm pretty sure my religion is Capitalism and I do love the holidays, commercialized and all. The other thing is my Mom is still around and I don't see her enough, but from one who knew your Mom -- she was a shining star.

- jerryhoward73

----------------------------------------------

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Lighting up is getting harder in South Florida --":

Well Jack, I'm going to give you my opinion on smoking in restaurants and breast-feeding. The problem is we have been programed to think breast-feeding is to be done in private but that all came about in the late fifties when people started to move around the country more and the new formulas for babies were invented. Look around now and see how many babies you see drinking from bottles in public , I see lots.

Now smoking in restaurants -- as you know, I smoke, I don't make it a habit of smoking in a restaurant, I think I should have that right if I feel the need to do it. Just like the woman should have every right to breast-feed her child there when the need arrives. There should be smoking areas in a restaurant. So when I see someone who cries about it, I can go light up to piss them off.

I'll be willing to bet that you agree with the people suing McDonald's because their kids are fat, when in fact it's the parents fault, they don't or will not take the responsibility for their own kids. That's a big problem in this sue happy country we live in today.

As for me I like it here with all it's faults . Still friends after all the years and miles right . These are only my opinions and we all have the right to disagree.

- jerryhoward73

----------------------------------------------

In response to Donna' s Counterpoint, " Christmas is the BEST Holiday --":

Donna,
It is so crazy around Christmas at my house that when everyone starts to go a little insane I pull out my favorite Christmas movie "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation", and make my family watch it with me. We all have a good laugh and then spend the rest of the Holidays smiling at each other, "Our secret joke," on the relatives. Keep Smiling---

JACK, JACK ,JACK. If you aren't carefu,l Santa's gonna give you a short handled plunger for Christmas. LOL. I know what you mean though, stores start their Christmas push in September. I'd like to see it start around December 10-15. Then you wouldn't be tired of it BY DEC. Hey -- Remember Thalheimers at Christmas? (I think this was talked about already) Oh well, that was back in the day. But I sure miss "the day".

- allenmurphy73

----------------------------------------------

In response to Jack's Editorial, " Lighting up is getting harder in South Florida --":

I'm with you Bud, I have Emphysema as a result of my smoking( I started when I was 6) BUT... Nobody made me do it, I know they made cigs with elevated nicotine levels but I still was able to quit .I just had to really want to bad enough.

As for breast feeding ,I guess I do tend to look , not the cheap thrill thing but it's just something you see less of. When we were kids women used to breast feed their children on the Fairfield Transit bus all the time. It was a common occurance then ( like nude bathing in France, they're used to it) it's nothing out of the ordinary.

- allenmurphy73

----------------------------------------------

Now, Jack, let's give credit where credit is due.

Florida was the first state to enact legislation to ensure that mothers who choose to breast-feed their babies cannot be harassed for doing so. Florida led the nation in 1993 by enacting the first comprehensive breast-feeding legislation in the United States. This legislation clearly stated that this important and basic act of nurture must be encouraged in the interests of maternal and child health, and that a woman has a right to breast-feed any place she has the right to be, even if there is some exposure of the breast. Many states began to copy this legislation, starting the onslaught of breast-feeding legislation in the U.S.

Both of my children were exclusively breast-fed. Even though my experience pre-dates the 1993 legislation, I never once had an issue with this while I was nursing my children. With just a little practice, it is possible to do this so discreetly that even those people seated at the next table will be totally unaware of the presence of a nursing baby.

In 1994, Florida again led the nation by enacting the first legislation that looked at the importance of breast-feeding mothers being supported by their employers when they return to work.

I returned to full-time work just a couple days after my first child was born. My son remained at home with his nanny, who fed him breast milk that I had collected throughout the previous day while I was working. Even in the business environment, I received only respect and admiration from my clients and colleagues when I excused myself every two hours to collect milk for my baby to have the following day.

Like many things in life, it's all about choices. What I hear you saying, Jack, is let's support people's right to make healthy choices. Nobody will argue that smoking is a healthy choice. Or that breast-feeding is an unhealthy choice. It's time that restaurants wake up and smell the coffee.

- Denise Feldman (Reynolds)75

------------------------------------------------------------

Jack, I think perfumes should be banned also. They make me sick at my stomach and give me headaches. How appetizing can that be? I think they ought to do a study on how the chemicals in perfumes and colognes and all that scented junk does to people. I bet that causes cancer, too.

I don't care for smoke either while I'm eating, but let's be fair.

In response to Donna's column, " Scary Stuff and a good night's sleep --":

Hi Donna!

We have a lot of questions up here too... what is a sniper, what is anthrax.. and just today the school sent home a letter about addressing these things with your children. Here are some of the things they said.

It is important for you to be calm and to model a calm outlook for your children. Children echo their parents' moods and feelings, and it will help your children cope if they see you are calm about ongoing events.

Reassure your children that they are safe and that their safety is a priority at school. If they know that their teachers and administrators, as well as their parents, are working to keep them safe they will feel comforted and secure.
Maintain your normal routine. Keep the same meal and bedtimes.
Let your children know it is okay to feel anxious and they had a link.

In response to Jack's editorial,
"The Bug Got Me and Other Stuff -- " :

Jack,
I read your piece about the bug that got your computer. As limiting as it can be at times, that is one reason I am glad to have the WebTV system. It is resistant to those types of problems. It consists of a small box unit that you connect to your TV (and VCR if you desire) and your phone line. It allows one to have e-mail and to surf the internet, but that is it. It does not have a hard drive or disk drive, or memory. You can't download anything or install any programs. You can't do anything like Lotus or Word or create documents. You can, if you desire, hook up a printer and print something directly off the internet, but again, it cannot be downloaded. With this system, there is no memory or hard drive for a virus to attack. The email is through a website, like Hotmail or Yahoo is. The address book is saved on the website, not a computer, so again, viruses can't go through it. My cousin recently had a virus hit her computer and it was forwarded to everyone in her address book -- everyone that is except me, therefore, it did not get forwarded to anyone in my address book.

For anyone who does not need anything more high-tech than being able to e-mail and surf the net, this is the system to have. It costs roughly $100 to buy , you can install it yourself in minutes. While I do have a computer (a recent hand-me-down from my Mom when she got a new one), I still prefer to use the WebTV system for Internet and e-mail, if just to avoid this very type of problem. My computer is not hooked up to the internet. My daughter uses it to play her computer games. And if she gets it all screwed up, not to worry. I can still check out my favorite website, SpringerConnection.com, on my WebTV and converse with Springers everywhere!

If you'd watch HGTV instead of Oprah, you'd know how to build your own kitchen cabinets. That way you can also work out that frustration caused by crazy drivers by building these cabinets! -------------------------------------------------

Jack,

I thought about your column today as I was driving on U.S. 1 near my house. At least 100 barricades have been erected around this particular intersection, accompanied by prominent orange construction delay signs. This set-up has stalled traffic to a crawl for nearly a week now.

Oddly enough, the first construction worker has yet to appear on the scene. We drive by there every day - morning, noon, and night - and there is absolutely no construction activity. Just signs, barricades, and bottlenecks.

It's become a running joke in our car. Today, when we crawled through this intersection devoid of workers, yet another time, I was wondering aloud who in their infinite wisdom had scheduled all of these barricades and signs to go up when there was no work being done. My teenage son, who has an answer for everything, said, "That's obvious! They had enough money in the budget for the barricades but not enough for the workers!"

I thought you'd get a chuckle out of that, Jack.

Jack, this is way off!!

1. I don't do housework - I pay someone else to do it.

2. I have no interest in getting out of the house now that I am divorced!

3. I fall asleep upon trying to watch sports on T.V.

4. I "pluck" my chin whiskers - always have!

5. Better than no hair at all!

6. You're right about the sweat pants minus the underwear!

7. No, forget the boat. I want my own private pier.

8. People don't ask me for nothing much less my autograph!

9. I'm leaving tomorrow for the beach - no elk hunting!

10. Not as easy for me to do as it is for you.

Get a life, Jack! (Ha! Ha!)
Maybe you should start watching Dr. Phil -

Hey Jack,

I am not an expert on male hormones by any means, but I did read a study recently that you might want to keep in mind if you are starting to weep while watching Oprah. It seems that scientists in Canada have advised men to reconsider their beer consumption based on results of research that indicates the presence of female hormones in beer.

The theory is that drinking beer makes men turn into women.

To test the theory, 100 men were given six pints of beer each within a one-hour period. It was then observed that 100% of the men gained weight, talked excessively without making sense, became overly emotional, couldn't drive, failed to think rationally, argued over nothing, and refused to apologize when wrong.

No further testing is planned.

A fellow Springer sent me this page, and I must say, I have been goofing off at work for the past hour!!! This is really great, I'm having fun so far. Who's in charge of it, who designed it, and do you need or want any writers for HS school/town stories? Keep up the good work!!

In response to Jack's editorial, "Pink Flamingos are keeping me up at night", Denise F. Reynolds, class of '75 writes:

Now, Jack, we can't have you losing any sleep over this. Being a Floridian myself, I recognize this syndrome. You are ornamentally-challenged, my friend. And looking in all the wrong places to remedy your situation. K-Mart. Wal-Mart. Are you still shopping in line? That's so twentieth century. Shop ONline, not IN line.

My shopping site of choice is www.quixtar.com . You'll be delighted to know that they have more than enough pink plastic flamingos to go around. I headed over to Catalog City, one of the Quixtar Partner Stores and ran a search on "pink flamingos". Not only do they have your Pink Flamingo Yard Ornaments (2 for $9.95), but you can live out all your pink flamingo fantasies with a Pink Flamingo Mailbox, a Pink Flamingo Tie, a Pink Flamingo Crystal Pin (wear THAT at the next reunion), and Pink Flamingo Christmas Ornaments. Add to that posters and greeting cards featuring those lovely pink birds and you will be good to go. Don't pass up the What Makes Flamingos Pink? book or The Pink Flamingo Murders (set of 4 cassettes, the book on tape variety).

You'll need to register to use the site, just like at Springer Connection. Registration is free, sign on as a client (use referral #858445, key OPP).

And stop standing in line, Jack.

Thanks to those who have worked so hard on this website for a job well done. This new website is great and very user-friendly for those of us who grew up in the "olden days", before home computers were invented and had to learn about them a little later in life. Keep up the good work....it is appreciated!

Webmaster's Note: These comments concern the first Springer Connection Site (Old in the Web means over 6 weeks old).::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::.

Hi Jack!!, Thanks for creating this website.. I'm sure your new nickname can be Daddy Bell, 'cause you are reaching out to touch many.. I have felt way out of touch since I live in Texas and don't go home to Va. much.. So add my name, which is still the same along with my e-mail. I graduated in 1978.. Maybe with this website the info about reunioins can be put out with alot of advance notice for those who live out-of-state... Thanks Again, Cheryl Durham Class of 1978

I would love to be a member of this website. Looks like lots of people from the 70's. I would love to hear from anyone who happens to remember me. I live away from Sandston now, all the way in Pittsburgh Pa., but hey....I never got away from Black & Gold. Steelers & even my kids high school are all Black & Gold. Susan Shaw Lewerth, Class of '75

Really enjoyed reading your memories of HS and look forward to future updates. I still live in the area and am trying to get emails for fellow classmates I see from time to time. Thanks for all your efforts! Nancy DeMarco Hall, Class of '73

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope the site gets well known because I would love to get in touch with several of my old friends that I can't locate now. Cathy King Linebrink, Class of `81

Hi Jack! Great web site! Thank you so much for your initiative and hard work. Please add my name to class of ’71. I am looking forward to making contact with old friends. Sincerely, Lynne Rehrer Herlihy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi, I think this is a great idea-I've lost contact with just about everyone I was in school with! I'm also in the Classmates.com site. You can add my e-mail address to this list.

Hi Jack, Great web site! Thank you so much for your efforts. Please add my name to class of ’71. My name was Denise D’Arville, now Samuels. Hope to see some familiar faces soon.

- Sincerely, Denise D'Arville Samuels

I'm glad someone FINALLY got their act together and created a Springer website! (Being computer illiterate, I knew it couldn't be ME!) It will be great to be able to contact other classmates directly - and the price is right - FREE! I was more than a little dissapointed to discover a fee was required to contact classmates who had taken the time to sign-up with the larger reunion bulletin boards. I think this site will definitely be a big help when I start working on the next reunion. (Yes, there will be another one!) I appreciate the time and effort you have put into this project. I look forward to watching it grow as the word of it's existence spreads. Keep up the good work and I'll do whatever possible to help you out.

- Kindest Regards, Karen Burley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jack,
Thanks for designing this site, what a wonderful idea! Please add my email address to the site: Charlotte R. Luck (now Baker)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suggestion: It would be nice if there was a master list of names you could go to to see who is in there instead of checking out each letter. How many names do you have in there so far? - Nancy (Price) Howard

Answer: A valid idea Nancy BUT, I’m afraid that would be twice the amount of work for me to update TWO lists and on top of that I would have to put them in alphabetical order (YECK!) and that is not one of my favorite things to do. How many names? I’m not sure yet. At some point I would have quit counting and lost track anyway, so I figured I would save myself the guilt and not count from the beginning. - Jack

Second Answer: The new site will allow Springers to find each other by First Name, Last Name at Graduation, or Graduation Year - admin -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Go ahead and put me on the Springer site. I emailed Gray McCalley so you might hear from him.
- Velpo Robertson

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Jack.....I think this website is a really good idea and thank you for being the one to come up with it. I personally have lost contact with most of the people I knew in school. I just went into the classmates.com last week probably for the first time in two years and didn't know there were so many people included. Thanks for the email and you can include me in the site. I look forward to checking back and seeing the progress.
